In The good doctor Season 3 finale, Lea (Paige Spara) swears she’s in love with Shaun (Freddie Highmore). However, we are having a hard time believing it. Here is the Showbiz Cheat Sheet version about Shaun and Lea.
Lea initially refuses to date Shaun
When Shaun first approaches Lea about a romantic relationship, things go terribly wrong. He tells her in Season 3, Episode 16 (titled “Autopsy”) that he loves her, only to be met with a look of pain. Although she says she loves him, she rejects his advances and tries to convince him that they are not a good combination. Lea does this by telling him all her bad qualities, hoping she’ll back off.
“I love you too,” says Lea. “But you know me. I am selfish and I am very, very needy. I am a total disaster. How am I supposed to put all that into you? It’s just that I am a challenge for anyone, and you are you. Shaun asks Read if you don’t want to date him because he has autism. Instead of giving an answer, she walks away.
Shaun has a hard time accepting Lea’s rejection
Despite Lea’s best efforts to keep Shaun from hanging out with her, he doesn’t give up. He continues to chase her even further. Shaun is persistent, but that does not influence Lea. She continues to tell him that she is not interested. Shaun keeps pushing and says he can fix what he doesn’t like so they can get out. Unfortunately, Lea is frustrated and tells her that she is autistic and “can’t fix that.”
At the end of Season 3, Episode 18 (titled “Heartbreak”), Shaun unleashes his anger on Lea. He threatens to smash her car with a baseball bat and says he wants her to feel the pain he feels. The idea occurred to him to smash his car from his patient’s girlfriend. Earlier in the episode, his patient’s girlfriend finds out that he cheats on her, so she smashes his car with a bat.
“I want to destroy your car,” says Shaun. “I want to hurt you the same way you hurt me.” Lea tells Shaun that destroying her car is a bad idea. Shaun comes to his senses and says he can’t destroy his car. However, he proceeds to lash out at her.
“You acted like you cared about me, but you don’t even respect me,” Shaun tells Lea. “You are flaky and you can’t have a boyfriend. And you can’t keep a job, and nobody likes you. And you will end up alone and you deserve it because you are a superficial, selfish and prejudiced person. ”
Leah changes her mind, but is she really in love?
During the season 3 finale there is an earthquake. Shaun is trapped with a woman and he successfully rescues her from the rubble. After Lea sees what a hero she is, she suddenly decides that she wants to be with her. She tells him that she was “stupid” for not seeing that she is in love with him, but is that true? Is she really in love or was she just caught in the moment?
Paige Spara believes that Lea really loves Shaun, but is overwhelmed and sometimes confused. This is what Spara said about the episode (season 3, episode 16) where Lea rejects Shaun the first time. This is what he says to TV Line:
Lea loves Shaun. Lea has a bond with Shaun. That would be her person. However, would she be the person for him? I can’t be selfish right now and just say, ‘I love you. Let’s try this.
There are many other external factors at play here, and … it’s this awkward calculation of being responsible for someone else, not just under the umbrella of love, but in a different way for someone else’s well-being … and I think than hitting her right then. That’s why it’s so overwhelming [and] a bit confusing.
