Doctors are shocked after Darren Till fought (and nearly beat) Robert Whittaker with torn MCL

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight contender Darren Till nearly defeated former 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker in the UFC in the ESPN 14 main event last weekend in Abu Dhabi, but he ultimately fell short in the judges score cards.

That’s a pretty impressive feat when you consider that “The Gorilla”, now relegated to a cast, tore his medial collateral ligament (MCL) in the second round of his 25-minute adventure. But don’t take my word for it, just ask your treating doctors.

“Torn MCL, the doctors are amazed that he was able to resist the past three rounds,” Till’s coach Colin Heron told ESPN. “He is in a cast for six weeks and then we will reevaluate him, hopefully he will start knitting while immobilized.”

Up to 27, he moves to 1-1 in the middleweight division, having previously captured a decision victory over Kelvin Gastelum last November in New York. Depending on your recovery schedule, we may not see “The Gorilla” return to its octagon until the first quarter of 2020.

When the former welterweight returns to the cage, he will likely be paired with fellow middleweight Jack Hermansson, much to the chagrin of “The Joker.” Until then, we have plenty of other 185-pound fights to keep us busy.
