Actress Kerry Washington said while broadcasting the virtual Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, saying “the Black community in this country is very diverse” – just weeks after Democratic nominee Joe Biden was forced to comment on the subject.
Before Washington submitted a pre-taped segment about immigration, Washington began by telling viewers that the next topic “is close to my heart.”
“The Black community in this country is very diverse,” Washington said. “On the side of my father, I am descended from African-Americans who came from slave ships that landed in South Carolina and who were part of the great migration to the north that has such a defining role. played in who we are as a nation. On my mother’s side, my grandparents came here as immigrants, part of a rich history that also defined America. They immigrated to this country from the West Indies via Ellis Island in the 1920s. “

However, some observers have made a connection between their comments and remarks made by Biden earlier this month.
“Kerry Washington just did a segment at the DNC about how diverse the black community is, in a brutal subtweet from Democratic nominee Joe Biden,” Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy responded.
GOP’s Director of Rapid Response, Steve Guest, made a similar connection, placing her remarks alongside the former Vice President.
Biden raised eyebrows over remarks he made during an interview aired at the convention of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and National Association of Spanish Journalists (NAHJ).

In the full interview, Biden contrasted the Black and Latino communities, saying “unlike the African-American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community with incredibly different attitudes about different things.”
Later that day, Biden reiterated those remarks, speaking at the National Association of Latino Elected Officials conference. In that appearance, he promised that if elected, his administration would reflect “the full diversity of this nation” and “the full diversity of the Latino communities.”
“Now what I mean [by] full variety [is] unlike the African-American community and many other communities, you are from everywhere, “Biden explained. You’re from Europe, from the tip of South America, all the way to our border with Mexico, and the Caribbean. En [of] different backgrounds, different ethnicities, but all Latinos. We’re going to have the chance to do that when we win in November. “
After significant backlash, Biden retracted his comments, offering a clarification on Twitter.

“Earlier today, I made some remarks about diversity in the African-American and Latino communities that I want to clarify,” Biden wrote on Twitter. “In no way did I mean to suggest that the African-American community is a monolith – not by identity, not by problems, not by problems at all.
“In my career,” he continued, “I have witnessed the diversity of thought, background and sentiment within the African-American community. It is this diversity that makes our workplaces, communities and country a better place. My commitment to you are this: I will always listen, I will never stop fighting for the African-American community and I will never stop fighting for a more equal future. “
