DJI OM4: The new gold standard for smartphone gimbals [Video]

The DJI OM4 is the successor to the Osmo Mobile 3, and what I would consider the gold standard for smartphone gimbals. With each generation, DJI further refines its germs, making it easier for daily use in all key areas: portability, durability and functionality. The OM4 is no different because it introduces some innovative features.

Designed

The OM4 is extremely portable because it was designed to be folded up and tossed in a bag. While the padding does not feel exactly natural to perform, the way they have designed the mechanism is certainly something I appreciate. You can tell that the OM4 does not come loose and come apart, unlike other gimbals with folding mechanisms. And because of the materials used, it is very light, so any concerns of pain in the extended use should be an aftercare. It is very comfortable to hold, and when you use the gimbal, you generally feel that everything is in the right place.

Magnetic attachment system

One of the biggest updates the OM4 brings is a new magnetic attachment system. With DJI, you can choose between an attachment or a pop-socket-like attachment that I assume is intended for more permanent use. The magnets are very strong. I never felt like my smartphone was in danger of being compromised.

The ease of this setup will really appeal to the more casual user. The OM4 provides by far the easiest setup process for a gimbal. No real balance is required. And just to make sure you have the best placement on the phone, the OM4 comes with a descent guide to get you started.

Functionality

Overall use and stability with the OM4 is great, in my experience. After all, this is a smartphone gimbal, so expect to have some movement / motor restrictions compared to an $ 800 professional camera gimbal. But overall, I’m really happy with how smooth it feels. The motors will only perform if they make very fast and random movements at the same time.

The main source of functionality of this gimbal comes from the DJI Mimo app, which you want to install to fully unlock the capabilities of OM4. The app has a full built-in camera with several different shooting modes for the smartphone and for the gimbal itself. Gesture controls, active tracking, hyperlapse, and stylistic zoom features are all present in the Mimo app, giving OM4 users much more to play with. Make sure you check out our hands-on video to see it in action.

9to5Mac’s Nim

Overall, this is a really fun gimbal to use. The streamlined design makes the shooting aspect of mobile content creation a lot more enjoyable. It is well built for travel and is generally the most reliable smartphone gimbal I have used to date. For $ 150, if you are someone who might be earning a living to create content for Instagram like other mobile platforms, this is definitely a worthwhile investment. The OM4 can be ordered today from DJI. Will you pick one up? Sound out in the comments below!
