Twitter users began to notice that some apps and websites, including those from the Postmates food delivery service, fell on Friday.
Discord, a group chat app, tweeted on Friday that “users are currently having trouble disconnecting from Discord due to an internet problem. We have all engineers on deck investigating the problem.”
The outage appears to have been caused by issues with Cloudflare, a cloud technology that supports many websites and apps. Cloudflare tweeted that it was investigating the problem shortly after some users reported the outage.
Company CEO Matthew Prince then posted a tweet acknowledging the problem, tracing it to a router in Atlanta.
“We isolated the Atlanta router and closed our backbone, routing traffic through transit providers,” Prince said on Twitter. “There was some congestion that caused slow performance on some links as the registry caught up. Everything is being restored now and we are investigating the root cause.”

The company implemented a solution on Friday night and said it is “monitoring the results.”
A Facebook bug caused a similar outage last week, with Spotify and Tinder among apps that were blocked for many users. The problem can be traced back to a technical problem with the Facebook Software Development Kit, or SDK, that is built into some of those applications. The problem was later resolved.
