Detroit woman charged with $ 2 million unemployment fraud


DETROIT – A Detroit woman has been charged for her alleged role in a multi-million dollar unemployment insurance fraud scheme, according to authorities.

Authorities said the plan aimed to defraud the State of Michigan and the United States Government of funds earmarked for unemployment assistance during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

Brandi Hawkins, 39, was a contract employee of the Michigan State Unemployment Insurance Agency. She participated in the review, processing and verification of the legitimacy of unemployment insurance claims.

In April 2020, she is accused of using her access to fraudulently release payments on hundreds of fraudulent claims. More than $ 2,000,000 of federal and state funds earmarked for unemployment assistance during the pandemic were fraudulently released.
