Syracuse, NY – In addition to the 11 people reported on Saturday, five more died this weekend in Ond Nandaga County – making it the deadliest weekend here since the coronavirus epidemic began.
“Sadly, we had another brutal day,” Ondonga County executive Ryan McMahon said on social media this afternoon.
Since March, according to the county, 304 people have died here due to coronavirus.
Four of those who died recently were hospitalized, he wrote. There were three men, aged 6, 81, and 77, 77. A 94-year-old woman was also killed.
A fifth died at the nursing home, which oversees the state.
“This has been a devastating week for our community,” McMahon wrote.
And it has been a devastating month: 1 in 4 coronavirus cases confirmed here since March, found in December.
Today, another 400 newly confirmed cases have been reported in the county. About 10% of them – 43 – were related to senior living facilities, according to McMahon.
Out of the new cases, only four K-12 schools were found. Two of those four students involved tested positive, according to McHahon.
Saturday was the deadliest day since the epidemic began, with 11 people killed by McMahon.
Only the next day the toll was higher it came back in May. But it came after state government officials announced the deaths in about 20 nursing homes in one day, instead.
The second numbered week was May 16 and 17, when a total of 12 people died.
There were two patients hospitalized for a total of 261 people today. 47 of them were in intensive care.
The other 31 people admitted to the hospital are ready for discharge but must undergo a negative test before returning to their residences inside nursing homes.
That means 230 hospitalized patients are still being treated for Covid-19, a sign of hope, McMahon tweeted.
In total, 30% of the people admitted to the hospital now are residents of nursing homes, he said.
McMahon wrote, “Another positive, the vaccine will be distributed to nursing home residents this week. We will go through this. ”
