Community refrigerators providing free meals to those in need in Queens have been vandalized during the COVID-19 epidemic.
The full-size fridge was set in front of the state San Jessica Ramos district office fee in East Selfhurst in October and Employed by dozens of volunteers to provide free meals to the poor.
But when the Post visited on Saturday morning, there were containers of food and loose rice on the ground, and the door to the fridge and the electrical grid at the back were destroyed, calling it an “act of hatred.” ”
“Knowing that someone in our community will do this for a real lifeline has been really devastating,” Ramos told The Post. “At the peak of the epidemic, we were the main center. Most of our neighbors here, especially on this block and in this neighborhood, have not received any economic stimulus and are not eligible for unemployment insurance. ”
Ramos said his office fee is trying to collect surveillance video footage to see what happened. NYPD has not been contacted yet, he said.
The fridge is stocked by volunteers with food, fruits and vegetables donated by local businesses, he said, adding that “hundreds of people” use the fridge to feed their families.
Ramos said she is appealing to the community to donate so food can continue to be given. “I thank everyone for the support and donations we received to replace the fridge, and keep it in stock for the next few weeks,” he said.
“Many of our neighbors have already arrived,” he said. “We are going to replace the fridge, we will continue to keep full stock of it. No one will mess with our neighbors. ”
