Destiny 2 pyramids are building something on the tree with the silver wings

As much as Destiny 2 plays, I still find myself missing things. This is something that was pointed out to me over the weekend that I frankly hadn’t noticed at all. Usually, I’m aware of things that change week to week, like moving spots or the Almighty that doesn’t appear in the skybox, but this? I had completely missed it. I guess I’m not looking hard enough during the jamming mission.

Apparently, the Tree of Silver Wings, that giant tree in the middle of the Cradle under which Eris is always cooling, is … under construction. Week by week, the giant pyramid sitting on the crib seems to be building something inside the tree, corrupting the top, and progressing over time.

This is what the tree looked like when we started the season:

And this is what the tree looks like after more than a month:

Big changes, and it has created a bit of a mystery that some fans have been tracking, but some may have been completely lost. Hence this publication.

The Tree of Silver Wings is a continuing mystery in Destiny. It extends to Destiny 1, where Ruin Wings’ story tab talks about another silver tree:

“In the garden a tree with silver wings grows. The leaves are ruins, the bark mess. We don’t talk about seeds.

Now, we have a second exotic which is the Tree-Based Ruinous Effigy. We have a mask that is white / silver bark, and then the Eververse mask is the “corrupt” version with the angular, black texture of the pyramid that we now see at the top. The Ruinous Effigy story tab has Banshee talking about how the weapon actually eats our light and … converts it, albeit not enough for it to hurt us or to really notice.

The tree acts as the point of communion between Eris and Darkness, and I suppose it is possible that the more they talk, the more the top of the tree is corrupted and is just a kind of satellite dish.

But its form has spawned a common theory, one that I’m not sure I agree with, but worth considering. The idea is that the black circle that is forming is giving birth to a “Dark Traveler”. Xur has a line on how “Your traveler has a dark mirror”, and the idea is that Darkness is making a black Traveler grow to act as its opposite.

I’m not … sure how I feel about this theory. When Xur said that (years ago) I think it’s pretty clear that the Pyramids They are the Traveler’s dark mirror, and that would not literally be a “black sphere” Traveler we are seeing created now.

And yet I don’t know.

This idea makes me think of a truly crazy theory that doesn’t make much sense, but it occurred to me anyway. What if the Traveler was essentially the “child” of the Pyramids and the Dark? But he discovered a different way of exercising power (light) and escaped trying to give that gift to other races, and was hunted down by his “parents” across the galaxy. I mean, we’ve only seen one Traveler, and now this tree could be giving birth to a second, a “correct” one to work in the Dark.

This idea doesn’t exactly work with the entire Gardener versus Winnower story, represented by Light and Dark, but I find it odd that there is an apparently infinite number of Pyramids, but only one Traveler. But hey, maybe two, soon. Although I doubt it a little.

Anyway, I’ll keep an eye on the tree week by week with updates and see how things evolve. I have no idea if this will become a major item by the end of the season (now extended), but we will have to wait (a long time) and see.
