‘Destiny 2’ has delayed its expansion beyond light in part due to COVID crash

Sad news for the Destiny 2 community today. The fall expansion for Beyond Light, which will continue the tradition of a September release for Destiny almost every year, has now been delayed until November 10 from its original date of 22 December. September, so almost two full months.

The statement that Bungie released along with the delay has its usual “we want to make the game the best that we can!” Feelings that we normally see when there are delays, but also directly cite COVID blocking as a contributing factor:

“The past few months have been challenging and will continue to be during this pandemic. We have learned to create together in a new way, by having to work apart from each other. Despite these obstacles, we are still committed to the same level of quality that our fans expect. “

I have been told that there are additional complicated issues as well that this is more work than a normal expansion due to things like a completely new damage type.

While game delays are pretty industry standard to the point that players don’t care too much, it’s a bit tricky for Destiny, a game that has been running like clockwork with three-month seasonal releases and expansions. September for years. And a community that always demands something to do.

Fate has never had to extend a season up to 50 days before, and it looks like it will probably leave a lot of blank space in Season of Arrivals, because current content will either have to extend, or it will end early and will only be a few weeks dead by final. We should get more info on the TWAB later today, but things like Moments of Triumph are supposed to be extended due to the delay, and maybe that’s true for Solstice of Heroes as well, as it’s slated to debut in August and brings back EAZ. , I believe. So maybe that will be left in the game longer.

There’s no way to avoid the fact that this is a bummer for both fans and Bungie. I think the community will have to be a little sympathetic when arrivals inevitably sell out due to this delay, but I guess that makes anticipation for Beyond Light even higher. However, I wonder what will happen to everything next year, as you may have to change the entire seasonal model awkwardly with this new year 4 start date.

November is a very busy month this year, as always, but now especially since we are likely to have the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X as well. I was told that this delay has nothing to do with these two consoles (although Destiny 2 will appear on both). Cyberpunk 2077 comes out a week later on November 19, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is even closer on November 17. So it is not ideal.

More to come at TWAB, which should be up early today. Ah man.

To update: TWAB got up early. The interesting aspects:

  • Moments of Triumph runs through November 10, but not until the end of the season.
  • Solstice of heroes is until September 8, which did not change.
  • Festival of the Lost has been added to this season, from October 6 to November 3, since it is a bit difficult to move a Halloween event, so it makes sense.
  • Some kind of increase [REDACTED] The event will come. Possibly rewards for something.
