One of Destiny 2: beyond the lightThe most anticipated features are the addition of Stasis, a new element for the game. Stasis is the first new item in Destiny’s history, adding new powers for players to wield and a new weapon burn to go alongside Arc, Solar, and Void.
Players had a very brief glimpse of the new powers when Bungie announced Beyond the light begining of June. But the studio released a new teaser specifically focused on Stasis during the Xbox Series X July Showcase.
We learned a lot more about how Stasis works, including Bungie’s three buzzwords: Create, Encase, and Shatter.
Powers of Ice
Throughout the trailer, we see that the Guardians use different grenades to create ice or freeze targets.
At 22 seconds, a Guardian throws a stasis grenade at one of the pillars. When the grenade hits, it creates multiple ice platforms that protrude from the pillar on two sides. The fellow guardians then use these platforms to jump to a new group of enemies. This grenade looks like a kind of tube.
We see another type of grenade 31 seconds inside the trailer, which looks like a small group of ice. The Guardian drops this grenade to the ground and freezes all nearby enemies, completely stunning them.
At 35 seconds, the tube grenade from before makes another appearance. But this time, we see a hunter knock him to the ground during a Crucible game. Ice sprouts from the ground and throws the hunter into the air. This grenade appears to have multiple uses, built around creating ice walls to help protect your teammates, propel them, or reach high places.
We don’t see our first stasis weapon until 55 seconds in the trailer. A warlock contains what appears to be an exotic grenade launcher or shotgun that shoots ice crystals. Later we see the same weapon in the hands of a Titan. This looks like one of the exotic weapons of the Golden Age seen in the Beyond the light page on the Bungie website.
Hunter
Hunter’s new super ability uses spikes to climb. At 26 seconds, the Hunter in the trailer launches the pick at a large group of powerful enemies, including several miniature versions of Scourge of the Past raid boss Insurrection Prime. When the selection explodes, it locks all nearby enemies in ice.
At 35 seconds the Hunter gives us a look at his new melee attack and how Stasis will work in PvP. The Hunter pours a three-sided ice glaze, different from the Hunter Super. The glaive hits a warlock and a titan, both of whom are in the middle of using their Arc Supers. The hunter’s glow bounces from one enemy to another, slowing them both down and pulling them out of their Supers.
The Hunter then launches a second glaive, which bounces between the two enemies again, this time freezing them in place. Based on this clip, it appears that hunters have access to two of these powerful glaives as melee overrides, similar to Knife Trick’s ability for Blade Barrage Hunters.
For PvP, it appears that players may need to hit enemy Guardians twice with stasis abilities to completely freeze them.
At 42 seconds, a hunter jumps into the air and activates some form of blow. The camera stops in the third person and the hunter summons an ice pick. The hunter then falls to the ground and destroys some frozen enemies.
Titan
Previously, the Titan Stasis Super was the least known to us, but we see it very well 18 seconds after the new trailer.
When the Titan activates his Super, they cover their hands with agglomerates of ice and knock them against the ground. The ice shards extend from the Titan until they reach a group of enemies. Then, the ice explodes on the ground, creating large pillars of ice, similar to the ice barricades that we see Guardians erected on the ground and walls.
The ice here seems to destroy enemies and build walls for players to hide behind or stand on.
At 40 seconds, we see a Titan fly into battle and crush some frozen targets, smashing them instantly with an area of effect hit.
At 47 seconds, a Titan runs forward and glides towards a group of frozen enemies. Ice crystals form around the Titan as they glide, but it’s currently unclear if it’s some kind of ability or just a way to destroy frozen enemies. Titans are the only class we see slipping and creating crystals like this, so it looks like this might be part of their stasis subclass.
At 53 seconds, a Titan jumps forward to hit an unfrozen enemy. As they jump, a small column of ice remains behind them. The Titans appear to have an ability, probably their melee, that propels them forward as they strike. This blow freezes the enemy.
Sorcerer
We don’t get a good look at any of the Warlock Stasis abilities until 40 seconds in the trailer. The sorcerer, who probably uses a melee ability and is not part of the super, summons a staff made of ice. Staff shoot a single ball forward, freezing multiple enemies at once. The staff disappears and the warlock draws his weapon again.
At 50 seconds, we see that the Warlock activates his Stasis Super seriously, jumping into the sky and summoning the same ice staff as before. In the next shot, we see a third-person view of the Warlock freezing and smashing nearby enemies with a pulse of ice.
This is all we learned from the trailer. It’s currently unclear if enemies take more damage while frozen, but according to Bungie’s buzzword “shattered,” it seems likely. The study will likely share more about Destiny 2: beyond the light and the stasis subclasses closest to the expansion’s release date of November 10.
Bungie also announced Destiny 2 and its expansions are coming to Xbox Game Pass this fall, including Beyond the light later in the year. Destiny 2 You’ll see improved performance on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 later this year.
