The UN said the recent threats against Dr Mukwej via social media and direct phone calls to him and his family “follow their new calls for condemnation of the continued killing of civilians in the Eastern DRC and responsibility for human rights violations and abuses.”
His family and colleagues at Panzi Hospital, where he works, have also been targeted.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet also recently warned that Mukwege was “seriously at risk.”
Mukwej has received death threats in the past and survived an assassination attempt in October 2012 when armed men broke into his home, shot him and killed his brother-in-law, DeGuard.
The move comes weeks after a United Nations speech condemning the 16-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo and calling for justice.

A new wave of attacks
Dr. In September, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East Africa said, “The hospital where Dr. Mukwege works should also be protected.”
