Several Democrats have accused the Trump administration of trying to sabotage the country’s postal system following a broad restructuring of the U.S. Postal Service, which some have characterized as a ‘Friday Night Massacre. ”Postmaster General Louis DeJoy stepped forward with a major reorganization of the Post Office leadership along with a freedom of tenure for leadership positions. The reorganization involves the transfer or relocation of 23 USPS drivers, including some who have been with the Postal Service for decades. Among the goals of the reorganization were the two top executives overseeing day-to-day operations at the Postal Service.
The Postal Service said that ‘the new organization’s functions are tailored to each other based on core businesses and will provide more clarity and focus on what the Postal Service does best; collect, process, move and deliver mail and parcels. But analysts say the new structure gives more power to DeJoy, a major Trump ally who has recently come under scrutiny amid delivery delays and the way elections could affect a moment when voting per post is expected to die due to the pandemic.
Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, a Democrat who leads the commission overseeing the Postal Service, described the USPS renewal as “sabotage.” Connolly wrote on Twitter that the update “really in Trojan Horse“And comes” deliberate sabotage to disrupt e-mail service on the eve of the election – an election that depends on e-mail messages. “He was not alone. Sen. Elizabeth Warren linked to a story of the shakeup and surprised him: “How many ways can the new Postmaster General sabotage the @USPS?” Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon also used the word “sabotage”To characterize the actions of the administration regarding the Postal Service. Sen. Kamala Harris also took issue with the criticism, saying that the shakeup in the Post Service leadership shows how “they are trying to take down the United States Postal Service from within – at a time when we need it most. ”
The shakeup in the USPS leadership came just days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Speaker Chuck Schumer had a meeting with DeJoy, who described Schumer as “heated.” Democrats have been critical of recent cost-cutting initiatives put in place by DeJoy, a major Trump donor, at the Postal Service who say they affect the service and the ability of Americans to vote by mail. Several key Democrats have called on the Inspector General of the Postal Service to investigate the new policy imposed by DeJoy, who is the first postmaster general in nearly two decades not to be promoted within the Postal Service.
