Delta Flight returns to its origin since passengers will not wear masks

Last Thursday, despite staff instructions, two passengers refused to wear masks on board a Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. As a result, the crew turned the plane around to return to the Detroit Metro Airport.

No compromises

According to WXYZ Detroit, flight DL1227 took off again and landed in Georgia after being delayed by the return to Michigan. Later, a spokesperson confirmed to Simple Flying that the two customers aboard the Boeing 737 were not complying with the crew’s instructions.

Delta is clear about its strict approach to face masks. The Atlanta-based team recently shared that it will require a virtual medical evaluation of passengers if they have a condition that prevents them from using a cover. Also, if for some reason travelers cannot complete this process, the company recommends that travelers should reconsider their travels.

Last week, it was reported that at least 100 people were already banned from flying with the operator for non-compliance regarding the masks. Delta CEO Ed Bastian previously outlined his company’s hard-line policy. Insist that those who do not comply do not fly with the airline in the future.

Additional requirements

Additionally, Delta will no longer allow passengers to wear masks with onboard exhaust valves. The Points Guy reports that the carrier said that any cover with this valve is not approved as the company does not consider it an acceptable face mask.

“The last guideline, informed by the many conversations we are having with health officials and other experts, is that face coatings and unventilated masks work best for everyone’s safety.” added the airline, as reported by The Points Guy.

“Delta has many unventilated courtesy masks for our airport customers who may need one.”

Delta’s U.S. counterparts United Airlines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines have also tightened their rules this month. Not only carriers are raising their stance on masks. Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley hopes that the Maintain a significant distance during the Prolonged Epidemic Act (MEDIUM) of 2020 will make face masks and center seat lock mandatory.

Extra caution is required

All in all, during this sensitive time, it makes sense for airlines to take a mindless approach when it comes to face masks. Therefore, it is highly recommended that if someone is unable to use one for medical reasons, please contact your airline in advance. Also, if certain carriers cannot make exceptions, travelers should seek alternative arrangements.
