ROMULUS, MI – A Delta Airlines flight departing from Detroit Metro Airport on Thursday had to return to the departure gate after a couple of customers refused to wear a mask during the flight. According to WXYZ Detroit, the flight was on its way to Atlanta, but was delayed due to the two passengers.
A Delta spokesman said the flight was delayed because the passengers “did not follow the instructions of the crew.” The flight finally departed for Atlanta after a delay.
Delta, like most airlines, has instituted several precautions designed to limit possible exposure of COVID-19 to passengers and staff. As part of Delta’s safety program, everyone on the flight must wear a mask at all times, except during meals. Guests with a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask must complete a ‘Clear to Fly’ process that can take up to an hour to complete.
Anyone who is falsely caught alleging that they are medically unable to wear a mask may be prohibited from flying the airline in the future.
Delta has also limited the number of passengers in the various cabins, blocking the middle seats and limited aisle seats in rows with two seats. The company also limits food and beverage service based on the duration of the flight and will no longer allow the crew to assist passengers with their luggage to limit contact points.
