Manchester United will hold talks with Dean Henderson next week as pressure on goalkeeper David de Gea increases.
Henderson is set to return to Old Trafford next season after two years on loan at Sheffield United if he is certain to be the club’s number one goalkeeper.
The ambitious 23-year-old does not intend to act as backup for De Gea, who is under scrutiny after yet another dire display in United’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.
Manchester United to hold talks with Dean Henderson next week about a return to the club
The news comes amid mounting pressure on current first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea
He has put renewed pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to leave De Gea and has put a question mark on the 29-year-old Spaniard’s long-term future at the club.
That could open the door for highly-rated Henderson, who will play his final game for Sheffield United on Sunday before his reps meet with Old Trafford officials next week.
They will discuss the improvement to the £ 35,000 per week contract that Henderson signed a year ago to reflect his recent progress amid Chelsea’s interest.
The two sides will also watch the upcoming move by the England U21 goalkeeper as he hopes to challenge for a senior squad spot in next summer’s Euros.
De Gea’s mistake against Chelsea has put renewed pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop him.
Sheffield United wants Henderson back, but he is eager to play at a higher level as long as it is his first choice.
The possibility of replacing De Gea at United depends on whether Solskjaer continues to support the former Atlético de Madrid goalkeeper or ask for time in his career at Old Trafford after more than 400 appearances.
Another hurdle would be finding a club willing to sign De Gea and match the £ 375,000 per week deal he signed last September. That contract still has three years to run.
However, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was in no mood to discuss where Henderson would play next season after his team’s loss to Everton.
Man United will also discuss an improvement to Henderson’s current United deal next week.
“I’m not interested in talking about an individual tonight,” Wilder told Sky Sports, having seen Toffees forward Richarlison deal a blow to the Blades’ European hopes with the sole aim of the game.
However, several experts have called for De Gea to be abandoned after his Wembley clanger.
Alan Shearer was the most vociferous first, insisting on BBC One that the persistent nature of the mistakes means United must now lift the Spaniard out of his misery.
United icon Paul Ince also criticized the 29-year-old for making “college mistakes” and for losing his hunger, while Kevin Campbell believes his mistake for Mason Mount’s goal on Sunday should open the door for Henderson.
