On Sunday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish received a promise from defensive end / outside linebacker Will Schweitzer from Los Gatos, California. Schweitzer fired from the Nebraska Cornhuskers just hours before his announcement to jump on this late offer by the Irish.
In addition to Nebraska, Will had a good list of offers from all over the country, including the Michigan State Spartans, Arkansas Razorbacks, Arizona State Sun Devils and more.
247’s Brandon Huffman presents this evaluation:
A bit of a tweener, it does not have the weight to be a defensive end, but has the appropriate raging ability to get up from the edge and get to the quarterback, while also falling into cover to cover tight ends and backs . Can also play inside, physically at the point of attack and can hit the ball carrier. Moves well in space and occupies a lot of ground. Active hands and can cover passes in parts. Need to continue adding weight and strength. Projects as a multi-year Power 5 starter and potential NFL draft pick.
Schweitzer is the 18th dedication of Notre Dame’s recruiting class in 2021, and the 3rd defensive end – although both of that number may change soon. It’s more than rumored at this point – we expect 4-Star defensive end David Abiara (sometime) to retire. Schweitzer’s offer is not only a delayed evaluation, nor does it replace Abiara. Schweitzer is a tweener who makes himself more of a defensive end from the weak side, while Abiara is legally a strong end.

Even with the recent adjustments to the Irish roster with medical difficulties, I still firmly believe that this 2021 recruitment class will be at a maximum of 20 maybe 21 recruits. Seeing what we think we know about Abiara means that there are 3-4 open spots left (and a few names that are possible).

With all the uncertainty about college football and states across the country canceling the high school football season – there could still be a handful of surprises in store for Notre Dame and other programs.
