The Republican candidate is projected to win one of two of the four candidates in North Dakota’s 8th district race. According to unofficial results from the state, he got about 35.53% of the total votes. G.O.P. Co-candidate Dave Nehring is projected to win the second seat with about .0.722% of the vote.
Ahl’s death in October raised questions about what would happen if he won the election in November. The North Dakota Attorney General issued an opinion stating that the situation would be considered the same as the decision to resign or retire the officers, meaning the district’s Republican Party would appoint a representative to fill its vacant seat.
His family announced that he had died of the virus in a statement on his campaign’s Facebook page last month. He was 55 years old.
“Our beloved son David died yesterday after a brief battle with COVID-19,” the October 6 statement said. “He was very careful, especially since he had a few health challenges, but he was unable to avoid the disease. We are sorry, and we say not because of how he died, but because of how he lived. Be remembered. “
Andhaal died as horrific cases of coronavirus were reported in North Dakota. Cases in the state have been steadily rising since mid-August and on Tuesday, North Dakota peaked at a seven-day average of new daily cases.
Andahal was endorsed by leading state officials
Andmar, a native of Bismarck, was a runner, land developer and retired professional driver, according to the Bismarck Tribune. He spent 16 years chairing the commission on the Burlington County Planning and Zoning Commission for eight years.
He met with North Dakota Governor Doug Bergham and U.S. Sen. The long-running state rap in the June primary with the support of Kevin Kramer. Beat Jeff Delzer.
“I’m joining the Republican Party in District 8 and Governor Doug Bergham to support David Anhl because we need more Trump Republicans in the state legislature,” Kramer said in a statement earlier this year. “I know David Andhal will support our AG producers and fight for coal.”
Andahal’s family thanked the supporters who played a role in his bid for the state house.
“He has been a public servant for many years and was looking forward to the opportunity to serve in the state legislature,” his family said in a statement. “We are sad that his wish will not come true. We thank all of you who have supported David in the past, and we ask for your continued support and prayers as we make arrangements to celebrate his life.”
The posthumous election victory of the blind, while relatively rare, is unheard of.
Dennis Hoff, owner of the Nevada brothel and self-proclaimed pimp, won the state legislative race in the 2018 midterm elections, three weeks after he died. Since 2000, at least five other candidates have also won elections posthumously.
