Dark Sky for Android has been restored via an unofficial app

  • A developer has released Dark Sky for Android as an unofficial app weeks after Apple shut it down.
  • Darker Sky replicates most of the free features of the Weather app.
  • It will not be available in the Play Store, and it might close soon.

Apple officially unveiled Dark Sky on Android on August 1, just over four months after receiving the Weather app, but there’s still a way to use it – albeit in a very unofficial way.

XDA has learned from an anonymous developer offering Darker Sky, a resurrection of Dark Sky that provides the app’s detailed weather forecast data as well as the familiar look and feel of the offunct official software. Most of the free features of the Android client remain intact, including full forecasts, the time machine, precipitation, temperature and radar.

You will not receive weather notifications, reports or submissions as widgets. Not surprisingly, you will not get the paid features either. Apple does not intend to handle these services, especially if it is more interested in rolling out the features of Dark Sky in iOS 14.

The app will not be available in the Play Store, as you might think, and you take some risks by installing decidedly unofficial software only available from the mysterious operator of a Telegram channel. Be careful then. We would also not be surprised if Apple climbs the app.

When Darker Sky disappears, you are not completely happy in the long run. Third-party apps can still use Dark Sky data until the end of 2021, so there may be an alternative. This is especially for diehard fans of the Dark Sky Android app who want to stick to a familiar interface until they have no other choice but to move on. See it this way: the app will not restore Dark Sky for Android, but it can reduce the pain of parting.
