Dark Google Translate theme will launch on Android

In February, some Google Translate users on Android received a dark theme. That aspect was never widely implemented, but a new modified version is now available.

Compared to the version that was released with version 6.5, the new dark Google Translate theme drops the light blue app bar for a more uniform gray. That splash of color was particularly jarring for an app with a lot of text. This brings consistency to the translation interface and matches all other Google applications.

This is a fairly straightforward implementation in dark mode. Translate for Android has not changed and still has a navigation drawer where the current section you are viewing has a faint outline. A Material Theme layout would remove that side menu for a bottom bar, which is already available on iOS.

There is no way to disable the dark theme within the app. Rather, you should use the Android 10 and 11 system level switch, which is a bit strange.

Starting with version 6.10 this afternoon, the dark Google Translate theme is widely available.
