The 49ers picked up their first block of practice in Tuesday’s training camp training session. The team will get a well-deserved day on Wednesday before returning on Thursday. Here are some observations from the team’s fourth practice camp.
Practice Recap
– Dante Pettis had his best day of camp so far. He picked up five passes over full-team bubbles from all three of the 49ers quarterbacks. Three of his catches came over the middle, including a jumping grip on a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo.
“He came along and it’s very encouraging – just the physicality he plays with (and) the competitiveness he brings,” Garoppolo said. “You love to see that and it’s just one of those things you have to go through. I think our whole group, as receiving corps, has done a really good job so far.”
– Nick Bosa was seen in the backfield on several occasions. He noted two ‘would’ sacks on the day.
– Raheem Mostert and Jerick McKinnon both had big runes for what would have been big wins during 11-on-11 work.
– Cornerback Jamar Taylor, who saw first team reps on nickel corners with K’Waun Williams out with bald tightness, swatted down a pass from Garoppolo meant for George Kittle during the “move-the-chain” period.
“He made a play in practice today that he has seen a few times from our offense and he played the stage,” said defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. “It was not his play to make, but he made the play because he has seen it so much. … He is very smart, he has been reliable, he works his tail off and he has also started a nice start . “
Defensive lineman Kerry Hyder knocked down a pass from Nick Mullens during the “move-the-chain” period. He said after practice, he hopes he can take just as much as he adds to the talent along the defensive line.
“When you get a group like this, try to figure out what you can add to the group,” Hyder said. “You just want to play off of those guys and try to be a sponge and look for the game they have. That way, you can also be a big part of the group.”
The 49ers resumed their coveted 1-on-1 drills on Tuesday. Here are a few takeaways:
“He carried me out the other day,” said Kinlaw of Tomlinson. “But it benefited me a little bit more today. But he just helps me get so much better. He taught me about taking care of my body. Laughter is the ultimate teammate. I appreciate him so much for everything he has told me.”
