Dak Prescott: I believe I’ll be a Dallas Cowboy for the rest of my career

The Cowboys did not sign Dak Prescott for a long-term deal by the July 15 deadline. Owner Jerry Jones and Prescott spoke Wednesday for the first time since.

Both expressed optimism that Prescott will remain with the team outside this season.

“Business is business, and once I’m in the locker room and part of what’s happening now, I do not focus too much on the future,” Prescott said. ‘It’s more about today. That being said, I’m excited to be Dallas Cowboy. I have been a fan of this organization. I have been a fan of this program for years. I love every chance I get and the platform I get to be the quarterback here. I love this team. I’m excited about what we can do and achieve this year. No frustration at all. Again, I believe that something will be done, and I also believe that I will be the Dallas Cowboy for the rest of my career. ”

Prescott added “there are likely reasons it was not done from both sides.”

Prescott will make $ 31.4 million under the one-year franchise tender, which is nearly $ 28 million more than the quarterback made in his first four seasons combined. The sides can handle a long-term deal after the season, but it will cost the Cowboys $ 37.68 million to tag him in 2021 if they can not get it.

Jones cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of the financial landscape for not getting a deal this year.

‘I don’t even want to be gleeful or thirty when I say it’s part of professional sports, and talk about the money. That’s part of it, “Jones said. “Roof is excellent. He is probably one of the top people I have been to for his age and his cumulative experience. . . . We think he is excellent. We think he is our quarterback of the future. We just could not get together at this particular time. I think it’s easily worth nothing that a lot of people were not together in franchise mode this year. One of the biggest reasons is the background of COVID. One of the biggest reasons is the economic problem. I just spent weeks and weeks, part of this rasping voice on the phone, talking to the NFL and the players association, working through the economic consequences and honestly, no one knows what next year or next year will be like the next year. Honestly, we all know that what we’re talking about in the case of Dak is next year and next year and next year and next year. That all came from it, and this was just less than stable time to talk about serious, serious – generation if you will, to use the term of Dak – dollars in an unknown period of time ahead. That was definitely one of the problems. ”
