After adding four players before the trading deadline yesterday and two more returning from the injured list today, the Chicago Cubs had some serious roster maneuvers on the to-do list (as you can tell by the long headline), and that’s just what they did. .

Starting with the injured list, Chris Bryant and Steven Souza Jr. have been active and joined the 28-man roster. Bryant will be batting second, starting from third base tonight, as we discussed earlier, and Souza will be off the bench. Both men got some bats on the South Band and are expected to rejoin the active roster today.
To make room on the active roster, (1) Tyler Chatwood leads the 10-day IL, as expected, after some elbow bruises and (2) Albert Almora Jr. heading to the South Band, which we found yesterday. . .
Meanwhile, the Cubs found a place on the active roster for three of their four timelines, DH Jose Martinez (starting tonight), outfielder Cameron Maybin and left-hander Josh Osich. A fourth-time player, Andrew Shaffin, is now on the Cubs, but is on the IL and is currently out of the 28-man roster. Hopefully he can contribute in a few weeks.
Josh Figley was already hired for the assignment to help create space for newborns, and now we learn that Casey Sadler has also become a DFED. Cubs now have seven days to trade, forgive or release Sadler. Hopefully, as always, he will clear the apology, and then decide whether he wants to be a free agent or instead go to the alternative site of the Cubs, where he could sensibly return sometime in the last month of the season. Sadler had a 5.79 ERA (6.56 FIP) with a walk rate of 18.2% in his 10 spot appearances this year.
