A forest fire near a military base 50 miles north of San Diego has forced thousands of people to evacuate on Christmas Eve, according to local fire authorities.
A fire broke out Wednesday in northern San Diego County, most of which has been occupied by Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. NBC San Diego reports that about 7,000 people have been ordered to evacuate overnight in support communities and in neighboring Falbrook.
In an update posted after 9 a.m. Pacific time, Ryan Rushing, Division Chief of the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, Said The fire consumed more than 3,000 acres.
Rushing said the rapid development of the fire was “inflamed by steep terrain, difficult entry and wind.”
Another tweet said the military camp’s “Falbrook Gate is closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles.”
Officers Said earlier At about 7:30 a.m. PT or Creek fire contained 35 percent.

The Creek Fire Response is being conducted by Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and Camp Pendleton Police Department.
