COVID-19 warning issued to truckers who visited the busy Kansas service area

Health officials in Kansas issued a warning after several COVID-19 cases were linked to a busy service area earlier this month.

The Shawnee County Health Department issued an alert after they allegedly identified multiple cases of COVID-19 linked to the Topeka Service Area located on the I-70 toll road at mile marker 188.

COVID-19 exposure is linked to restrooms and food court in the service area.

Shawnee County health officials are asking anyone who visited the rest area between July 2, 2020 and July 4, 2020 to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms of COVID-19.

These symptoms include:

  • fever of 100.4 F or more
  • cold
  • rigors
  • myalgia (muscle pain or aches)
  • discomfort
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • lower respiratory disease (cough, shortness of breath, or shortness of breath)
  • new olfactory and taste disorders
  • Diarrhea

“It is important for the public to be aware of this information in case they travel and stop at the Turnpike food court during their travel for the holiday weekend,” said Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino, County Health Officer from Shawnee. “While the risk of infection is very likely to be low, it is not zero, and people should contact their healthcare provider if they start to develop COVID-19 related symptoms.”
