COVID-19 outbreak hits Minnesota food processing plant

(KARE / NBC News) – A food processing facility in Minnesota is working to prevent a coronavirus outbreak among its employees.

Thousands of positive COVID-19 cases have been confirmed among workers at the Seneca Foods processing plant in Glencoe.

A Minnesota Department of Health spokeswoman said the department learned last week about an increasing number of cases of coronavirus at the Seneca plant, mostly dealing with newly arrived temporary workers hired for corn packaging. Seneca had every employee tested after hiring, but a decline in getting results back “hindered the company, and the ability of public health to monitor exposed workers or isolate asymptomatic employees” according to the health department.

As of Wednesday, there were at least 33 lab-confirmed cases that reported her working at Seneca during interviews with investigators, and another 12 suspected cases.

Three of the cases have led to hospitalizations.
