DHSS announced 71 new cases of COVID-19 in Alaska. Sixty cases are residents in 17 communities: Anchorage (28), Fairbanks (11), Wasilla (4), Chugiak (3), Eagle River (2), the municipalities of Bristol Bay and Lake & Peninsula (2), and one in Bethel, Bethel Census Area, Girdwood, Kenai City, Kodiak, Arctic Northwest District, Palmer, Seward, Soldotna, and Utqiagvik. This brings the total number of Alaska cases to 1,539.
11 new non-residents were also identified in:
Anchorage Township (8 in Anchorage): 2 tourism, 2 other industries, 4 unknown industries
Fairbanks North Star Borough (2 in Fairbanks): 1 visitor, 1 other industry
Kenai Peninsula District: Another Industry in Kenai City
This brings the total number of nonresident cases to 306.
Today, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz released the following statement about Anchorage’s recent increase in COVID-19 cases:
“We are in the midst of a significant increase in the case of COVID-19. Our ability to locate contacts has been overwhelmed and we must defend our hospital capacity. Tracking contacts is critical because it lets us know where the virus is and who has it so we can better contain it. Hospital capacity allows us to safely treat those who have become infected.
“We know that this public health crisis represents a threat to our jobs and businesses, and we know what works to keep us safe. Mask. Stay six feet away. Handwashing. Keep our social bubbles small. Flattening the curve is how we stop the increase in cases. And, as we’ve seen in so many other states, it’s what we need to do so we don’t have to start closing things. “

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The State of Alaska has announced 60 new positive cases of COVID-19 in Alaska. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,539. Currently, there are 902 active cases and 620 recovered cases.

There are 87 total hospitalizations. In total, there are 295 nonresident cases. No new deaths have been reported. To date, 17 Alaska residents have died with COVID-19 since March.
