“Wearing a mask is necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer from the wear and tear. There are some simple solutions,” said Lure Ren Friedman of Consumer Reports.
If you wear glasses or sunglasses, and they are constantly fogging, a sewn wire mask on top is your best bet. To wear that type of mask properly, pinch the top so that it fits the shape of your nose and tighten the sides for snug fit.
You can also apply an anti-fogging solution to your lenses or try wearing your glasses on top of your mask.
For those who have had an increased breakout after wearing a mask, there is a solution.
“When you wear a mask for a long time, you sweat, which causes bacteria to grow. This can cause acne,” Friedman said.
It ensures that both your face and your mask are clean before going out. If you’re still breaking down, a topical over-the-counter acne cream containing benzoyl peroxide may help.
If wearing your mask makes your ears feel irritated, it is because the elastic ear loops cause friction that can irritate the back of your ears.
Friedman advises rubbing some petroleum jelly behind your ears. You can also switch to a tie-back mask instead of an elastic ear loop.
“If your mask is slippery, tighten it until it feels a little difficult to breathe. You should also watch your mask move in and out while breathing.”
Having trouble understanding when you wear a mask? Friedman says you don’t have to speak out loud, but, slower and more clearly, and tells other mask wearers to do the same.
