A host of new guidance on reopening schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic has just been released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
More detailed recommendations on selected topics that the CDC previously yielded only a few cents have now been added.
In the new guidelines, published on Friday, August 21, the CDC said that “at present, no universal symptom referrals (screening of all grade K-12 students) are conducted by schools,” but did not add any specific reason.
Schools should develop a “plan of emergency operations” for daily monitoring of COVID and response to infections, the CDC said.
The CDC also says schools need to add equipment that improves airflow, including portable air filtration systems, fans, and an ultraviolet light that could strike the virus in rooms with poor air circulation.
In the new guidelines, the CDC also provides updated guidance on:
- food service
- students who may not be able to cope with cloth face
- students with special needs and limitations of health care
- cohorting, staggering, and changing strategies
- coping and support
