COVID-19 cases rise over the weekend in a handful of western central Minnesota counties, while Kandiyohi County sees only one


OLIVIA – Over the weekend, the Minnesota Department of Health reported only one new COVID-19 case in Kandiyohi County. However, the total for Chippewa County grew by four and Renville County rose by five. Chippewa is now 74 years old and Renville County is 24.

Yellow Medicine County increased to 27 positive cases, with an increase of 2. Kandiyohi County has 565 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19.

The information is included in the daily status updates from the Minnesota Department of Health, published at 11 am

Statewide, there were 427 new cases reported on Saturday and 523 reported on Sunday for a new cumulative total of 35,549, of which 3,585 were health workers.

There were 14 additional deaths attributed to COVID-19 over the weekend, for a current total of 1,425.


Most deaths, 1,123, occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities and 1,159 of the deaths were 70 years or older.

Statewide, there are 288 COVID patients currently in hospitals, 143 of them treated in the ICU.

The Minnesota Department of Health also reports that 30,809 of the positive cases reported by the state no longer need to be isolated.

So far in Minnesota, there have been approximately 585,417 complete tests since Jan. 20.

  • Chippewa County: 74
  • Kandiyohi County: 565
  • Lac qui Parle County: 4
  • Meeker County: 57
  • Pope County: 10
  • Redwood County: 14
  • Renville County: 24
  • Stearns County: 2,200
  • Swift County: 20
  • Yellow Medicine County: 27
