Coronavirus Updates: Health Officials Warn of Imminent Increase in COVID-19 Deaths

New test strategy for COVID-19
  • Three health officials said the number of daily deaths will increase.
  • More than 125,000 people have died in the United States from the coronavirus.
  • Globally, the number of infections has exceeded 10 million.
  • The California governor ordered the closure of bars in seven counties, including Los Angeles.

With only two states, Connecticut and Rhode Island, reporting a decline in new coronavirus cases, news from current and past health officials was not good on Sunday.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration, warned that the number of daily deaths from COVID-19 is likely to increase.

“We will have many weeks ahead of continuous growth in these cases, at least two to three weeks, even if we take aggressive action right now, which we generally are not doing, “Gottlieb said on CBS News” Face the Nation. ” And I know a lot of the discussion right now is that these cases are clustering in younger people, so deaths are actually decreasing, but not likely to continue. This spread is likely to seep into the most vulnerable communities and we are likely to see total daily deaths begin to rise again. ”

US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said the increasing deaths and hospitalizations in the coming weeks are “appropriate to worry about.”

When asked CNN if he was aware that an increase in hospitalization and death rates lagged behind an increase in positive cases, Azar said, “Those are certainly risks.“And he said that is why he is encouraging those who” have not exercised appropriate social distancing “in recent weeks to cover their faces and get tested.

Gottlieb said that universal masking should be required.

“I don’t understand why we cannot demand it in states that have major epidemics in progress, and there is a number that does so at this time,” he said. “We require people to wear seat belts in cars, but we are not saying they have to wear a mask in case of an epidemic.”

Gottlieb said if enough people wear masks regularly “that could only reverse the epidemic.”

“It is the simplest intervention we can take that could impact propagation right now,” he said.

On Fox News, Tom Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also urged people to wear masks.. He said the United States is likely to see increases for several weeks.

“This is why the three Ws are so important: wear a mask, wash your hands, or use disinfectant and watch your distance. There is something everyone can do,” he said. “We are all really in this together and if we work together we can help control the virus and get our economy back.”

Frieden said the increases in the number of cases are not simply the result of more tests. He also warned that an increase in the number of deaths is approaching.

“So the explosive spread is not being followed by an explosive increase in deaths, but what we are seeing in some states is already a huge increase in admissions to the intensive care unit and that is a sign that this is not benign. this is going to lead to more deaths. We estimate that in the next month we will see at least 15,000 more deaths in the United States, “Frieden said.

According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, more than 2.5 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the U.S.. At least 125,714 people have died in the country from the coronavirus. Globally, almost half a million people have died and more than 10 million infections have been reported.
