Coronavirus infection in Lona Angeles County on Sunday continued to rise to levels seen during the summer surge, and public health officials warned that street celebrations that greet election news over the weekend could easily increase the spread.
On Sunday, officials announced more than 2,500 new COVID-19 cases, with more than 3,000 confirmed infections for the fourth day in a row. Officials also confirmed two more deaths from the disease, a number that was probably less than the weekend reporting delay.
There were 23 deaths on Friday and 15 on Saturday; Sunday’s figures bring to a total of 7,172 seaweed-19 deaths to date, according to news from the County Department of Public Health. Across LA County, 322,207 Covid-19 cases were reported overall.
851 people in the county have been hospitalized with COVID-19; 29% of them are in intensive care, officials said. Across the state, cases continue to rise, but top health officials say California has not seen the kind of sharp increase this summer.
On Saturday, county health officials warned that crowds and street celebrations following the results of the presidential election “are places where COVID-19 spread is very easy and probable.”
“Let’s remember how we feel, it’s our duty to protect one another from COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of the LA County Department of Public Health. “Gathering with people outside your home, especially in settings where people are booming, singing or singing and not taking a distance, can easily increase the cases of Covid-19.”
