Coronavirus kills Florida, 17, marking the youngest death of COVID-19 in the state


A 17-year-old Florida resident has become the state’s youngest coronavirus-related death, according to state health data.

The Pasco County teenager became the state’s first COVID-19 death in a person under the age of 18 when the fatality was included in the Florida Department of Health data last Friday, the Miami Herald reported.

The teenager, who was hospitalized for COVID-19, had no history of recent travel, according to the report. No other details were provided.

Previously, Florida’s youngest coronavirus death was reported in a 22-year-old woman from Palm Beach County. Before her death, she had also been hospitalized due to the new virus.

COVID-19 cases have surfaced in the Sunshine State in recent days, prompting mayors in seven cities in Florida’s Miami-Dade County to promise to tighten their coronavirus rules.

To date, Florida has reported some 100,000 cases of the new virus and more than 3,000 deaths from COVID-19 since March, according to official estimates.
