Coronavirus in Oregon: State officials report 332 new cases on Sunday, 2 deaths

The Oregon Health Authority reported 332 new confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus and two more deaths Sunday.

The day’s numbers continue a trend of higher case counts identified since the state began reopening on May 15, an increase that is largely not attributable to further evidence. Public health officials say only a fraction, about 14%, of cases are detected.

Recent models of virus transmission estimate that the state could see between 1,100 and 7,300 new cases per day in late July. In a scenario where transmission rates increase by 10%, the number of cases requiring hospitalization could increase from approximately 17 a day in early July to a maximum of 76, which could challenge Oregon’s hospital capacity.

Oregon twice broke its record for recently reported cases last week, Thursday (389 new cases) and Saturday (409 new cases). Saturday’s case count was partially attributed to a reporting issue that prevented cases from being included in Friday’s report.

Where cases are by county: Baker (1), Benton (2), Clackamas (33), Deschutes (16), Douglas (4), Hood River (1), Jackson (2), Jefferson (5), Klamath (2), Lane (10) , Linn (8), Malheur (71), Marion (28), Morrow (7), Multnomah (70), Polk (4), Sherman (1), Umatilla (27), Wasco (1), Washington (35) , Yamhill (4).

New fatalities: The 233rd Oregonian to die of COVID-19 is an 86-year-old Malheur County woman who had underlying health problems. She tested positive on June 29. Authorities said they had not confirmed where or when he died.

234 is a 93-year-old woman in Washington County who died on July 7 and tested positive after her death on July 11.

Since she began: Oregon has now reported a total of 12,170 coronavirus cases and 234 deaths. In total, 286,197 people have been evaluated.
