The Oregon Health Authority on Tuesday reported 237 new cases of coronavirus and nine more deaths, reducing the state’s death toll to nearly 400.
Summer months have caused a wave of deaths unlike since the pandemic struck Oregon six months ago.
The Oregonian / OregonLive follows deaths by the death of an individual, as reported by the state. At least 20 Oregonians died with COVID-19 in March, 86 in April and 57 in May.
June brought another 58 deaths among Oregonians. A record 120 died in July. And already 55 died in August, roughly half the month.
The increasing deaths followed a dramatic increase in Oregonians diagnosed with coronavirus. About three-quarters of the state’s deaths are among Oregonians aged 70 or older, and the overall death toll is much lower than it was at the beginning of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, state officials reported this week that the percentage of Oregonians who tested positive for coronavirus remains too high for open schools.
Some 5.4% of Oregonians tested positive for COVID-19 in the week ending August 15th. It marked the seventh consecutive week above 5%.
Gov. Kate Brown has said the rate for three straight weeks should be 5% or below – something that has not happened since June.
