Coronavirus: Costco removes half-sheet cakes due to COVID-19

Costco has stopped selling the $ 20 cakes often brought to birthday parties and celebrations, and the coronavirus pandemic may be to blame.

What’s going on:

Costco said in a recent Facebook post that it has stopped selling the $ 20 half-sheet cakes. Instead, the company has pointed customers to 10-inch round cakes.

Costco said: “To help limit personal contact and create more space for social distancing, Costco has reduced service in some departments.”

Costco told the New York Times that there are no plans to get the $ 20 cakes back any time soon. The new cakes are selling well, the company said.

The largest photograph:

  • The removal of the cakes occurs when public health officials warn people against large gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic. Sheet cakes are often bought for large gatherings, which serve about 50 people, according to CNN.
  • Kroger and Sam’s Club have also stopped selling such cakes, according to CNN.
  • However, Walmart and Albertson still sell those cakes.

Costco and the coronavirus:

  • Costco made the headlines earlier this spring for deciding to require face masks and liners for shoppers entering the store, about what I wrote for Deseret News. The company did not announce when that policy could end.
