Apple partner Corning today unveiled its latest product, which it calls Gorilla Glass Victus. Gorilla Glass Victus is more scratch resistant than previous versions of Gorilla Glass, and Corning says manufacturers who use it for their devices will see significant gains in drop and scratch performance.
Corning shared a video showing Gorilla Glass Victus surviving a series of tests, including falls of up to two meters. In a Knoop diamond scratch test, Victus glass was able to withstand a load of 8 Newtons, outperforming competing products that were tested along with it, and was also able to withstand more pressure and more drops before succumbing to the break.
Corning regularly introduces new versions of Gorilla Glass that are more impact resistant, but improving scratch resistance has been more difficult for the company to improve significantly.
Devices made of Victus glass should be better able to resist scratches, but they will still not be invulnerable. When The edge asked Corning vice president Jaymin Amin if the pieces of dirt, sand, metal and other materials could still cause a scratch, Amin said that kind of warning would probably apply to “any glass material.” Gorilla Glass Victus, although it is capable of “reducing those instances quite dramatically”.
Corning has been a supplier to Apple for a long time, with Gorilla Glass used in devices across the entire Apple product line. Apple in 2017 provided Corning with $ 200 million for research, development and new equipment as part of Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund. Apple provided another $ 250 million in late 2019.
Corning said The edge that at least one smartphone maker deemed Victus to be much better than Gorilla Glass 6 which decided to put a thinner layer of the new glass on their devices rather than maximize durability, but it is not known which manufacturer it was from.
Samsung will be the first manufacturer to introduce a Victus glass product in the coming months, and other unspecified manufacturers are also working on Victus glass devices.
