The deputies – a 31-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man – were hospitalized and “fighting for their lives,” Saturday night, the sheriff’s department said.
By Sunday, “it looks like they’ll be able to recover,” Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.
“We’ll see what the long-term impact is. We don’t know yet, but they survived the worst.”
Local officials announced a 100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman.
How the ambush happened
The gunman went to the passenger side of the deputies’ car, raised a pistol and shot both deputies, Capt. Kent Wagner said.
“This is just a vague reminder that this is a dangerous job, and the result of actions and words. There is no simplification in our job because people don’t like law enforcement,” Villanueva said. “It pisses me off. It disappoints me at the same time.”
Both deputies were sworn in 14 months ago, the sheriff said.
Trump, Biden and Schiff condemn the attack
Both President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden condemned the shooting.
“When we find that person, we got faster with our courts, and we had to be tougher with our sentences,” Trump told a group of supporters in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Byden’s shooting was “not entirely obscure.”
“Acts of injustice and violence directed against police officers are unacceptable, degrading and completely hostile to the pursuit of greater peace and justice in America – as are the actions of those who incite such attacks,” Biden said in a statement.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, whose district includes parts of Los Angeles County, called the attack “cowardly.”
CNN’s Artemis Mostagian, Amir Vera and Jennifer Selva contributed to the report.
