A man was prosecuted in California on Saturday night when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were shot dead in their patrol car by a suspect who “fired without warning or provocation,” officials said.
The deputies, a 24-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, both had serious conditions and were “fighting for their lives” as they underwent surgery after the attack, which took place outside the metro rail around 7 p.m., local time. “Moments ago, two of our sheriff’s deputies were shot in Compton and taken to a local hospital,” the department tweeted. “They’re both still fighting for their lives, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”
According to KABC-TV, the deputies were out of surgery by 11pm.
The department tweeted a granular video showing the suspect approaching a parked patrol vehicle and being shot inside the vehicle’s passenger side window.

Both deputies were sworn in a year ago and the female deputy is the mother of a 6-year-old boy, officials told a news conference at 10 p.m.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva said that while he did not have a suspicious detail description, one of the attendees described the shooter as a “dark-skinned male.”
He said the shooting shows the dangers for officers and how conditions can change in the blink of an eye.
Reggie Jones-Sawyer, a member of the state legislature, called the officers heroes and condemned any violence that took place in the direction of law enforcement.
“I pray for the officers involved and their families,” Jones-Sawyer told a news conference. “It was an awkward, cowardly act.”
Villanueva said the shooting seems to be part of a growing trend of suspects firing on law enforcement officers without provocation.
He added, “Every week across the country someone is losing their life in the line of duty.” It pisses me off, disappoints me at the same time. There is no beautiful way to tell it. “
Expressing condolences to the family of the deputies, Villeneuve added, “Hopefully they can both recover from this.”
The FBI in Los Angeles tweeted that it had “offered resources and is ready to help” in response to the attack.
