Comey: ‘I can not imagine I’m a target’ of Durham probe

Former FBI Director James Comey has spoken out about Connecticut-American lawyer John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the agency’s Russian probe on Sunday, saying he had not been contacted and that it was being used as a political tool for the president. Trump and his supporters.

“I have not had contact with him and have not spoken to him,” Comey said of Durham, adding, “I can not imagine that I am a target.”

The Justice Department inspector general’s report that there had been a significant number of inaccuracies and omissions in applications for warrants submitted by the FBI to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that allowed former Trump Campaign Advisor Carter Page. The report revealed that the FBI relied on unverified information contained in a file compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele.

House Speaker Lindsey Graham, RS.C., who is leading a Senate inquiry into the case, pointed out that the FBI used the dossier, even though the FBI had interviewed Steele’s source, who said the information was not reliable. Graham has openly questioned who in the bureau was aware of what the sub-source said.

“We will not blame the system on any low-level analyst or business agent for defrauding the court,” Graham told Fox News in July. ‘I believe it’s going to the very top, and I’ll get it at the bottom and that means Sally Yates and Rosenstein, and McCabe and Comey will all come before the committee and they’ll be asked,’ What did you know and when did you know? ‘ ”

Comey, meanwhile, maintains that he and his department had nothing but pure intentions, implying that Durham’s investigation is simply being used by Trump and his supporters as political fodder.

“Given I knew what happened in 2016, which is a lot of people trying to do the right thing in accordance with the law, I do not worry about that investigation of the investigation,” he said. “They just want to have an investigation to talk about.”

Last week, Durham’s team asked former CIA director John Brennan for eight hours at CIA headquarters. Brennan later said through a spokeswoman that he was assured he was “no target.”

The Durham probe, however, as already led to one conviction, with attorney Kevin Clinesmith pleading guilty and admitting that it changed an email to say that Carter Page was not a source for another government agency. Page said he worked with the CIA. That email was part of a chain that was used as evidence in the 2017 renewed warning application.

Clinesmith told a federal court on Wednesday that he believed he provided accurate information but that he intentionally changed the email.
