WASHINGTON – Colorado health officials said Wednesday they are investigating another possible case of a new and potentially more contagious strain of Covid-19.
“We still don’t know much about this variable,” Colorado Governor Jared Police said Wednesday, advising to continue following CDC guidelines in the new year.
On Tuesday, Colorado health officials confirmed the country’s first case of the B.1.1.7 coronavirus type.
The infected man, his 20-year-old man, has no travel history and is distinguished by mild symptoms, officials said Tuesday.
The confirmed case as well as the second patient are both members of the Colorado National Guard. Both individuals were supporting the facility to stay a good Samaritan Society supporter in Shimla, about two and a half hours south of Denver.
A total of Colorado National Guard members are employed at the facility, officials said Wednesday.
“Both of these cases are employees of the Colorado National Guard who were deployed to support the staff at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Shimla,” said Dr. Krishna Kumar, a senior epidemiologist at the state’s Colorado Public Health and Environment.
He added that on December 24 these individuals were tested in a state lab, a routine measure for members of the National Guard who were working closely with Kovid-19 patients or epidemic potential areas.
“Right now we’re investigating two possibilities of how these two individuals could have acquired their infection,” Hurley said.
“In view of the variant investigation in Colorado, Medicare and Medicaid services centers have allowed us to temporarily suspend visits to nursing homes so that the population can be vaccinated quickly,” police said.
“The health risk posed by aging Colorado is not more acutely felt, but the social and isolation faced by many residents of nursing homes is a difficult and emotional part,” he said, adding that the move would protect the state’s aging community.
Emily Travanti, director of the Laboratory Services Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment, said officials are currently analyzing 24 suspicious samples that may have been altered. He explained that there was not enough data to link the additional 24 samples with the B.1.1.7 variant.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Dr. Henry Velke of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the new strain spreads “more easily and quickly than other strains.” Walk also said it did not appear to result in a higher risk of infection or death.
Volk said a person in Colorado has been infected with a new strain of the virus, which has no travel history, indicating that this type of transmission has occurred from one person to another in the United States.
He added that his arrival in the US was “expected” given how widely the variety is spread in the UK.
Preliminary analysis of the new variable, first identified in the UK, suggests it may be the culprit behind Britain’s recent spike in cases.
The CDC said in December that new tensions could already be circulating in the US without notice. The CDC cited ongoing travel between the UK and US as an explanation for the possible arrival of a new variant.

The discovery of tensions in Britain closed the borders of European countries such as Ireland, France, Belgium and Germany as well as countries outside the continent.
Last week, the British government confirmed that another infectious coronavirus infection known in South Africa had also come out in the United Kingdom. South African tensions have not yet been identified in the United States.
