With the third C College Ledge Football Playoff playoff rankings for the 2020 season to be announced on Tuesday night, we don’t have to wait that long to get a taste of how the CFP Selection Committee will top the country’s top 25 teams. This is the warm-up act for the warm-up act to be removed from the CFP rankings before the final match after the conference championship week on December 19th.
In general, I will detail here some of the criteria for the CFP Selection Committee to rank the top 25 teams and select the top four. However, nothing is common about 2020, and it includes information available to the committee. Here is a complete list of 2020 criteria:
- Eye test
- Record from head to head (if applicable)
- Conference Championship (if applicable)
Just this. There is no strength of schedule or related offense or any other analyst as the four conferences statistically distance themselves from the rest of college football just by playing conference games. For example, mathematically speaking, there is no way to compare SEC teams with Big Ten or any other league teams in that regard.
Even in some of the ancillary categories discussed – wins over teams above .500, wins over ranked teams – are not helpful. In the absence of nonfiction games there are some teams on either side of the .500 that are not usually in that position. Even the Big Ten and Pack-12 did not qualify for the AP Top 25 for most of the season, so some teams were at the bottom of the rankings that would not normally be held there, especially at the start. Going into the game-time rankings is illegal.
Due to COVID-19, the committee will have more roster issues than before. It remains to be seen how much concern they have. It will also make a difference in teams playing an unequal number of games. It is a helpless field.
With all that in mind, here I think the CFP rankings will look like Tuesday night.
