Five-star cornerback Tony Grimes, the 7th overall player in the Class of 2021, is the latest great addition to North Carolina’s highly-rated class. The 6 foot 180 pound Princess Anne High School chose the Tar Heels over Georgia, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Alabama.

Grimes, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, had 48 tackles and four interceptions as a junior last year, leading Princess Anne to an 8-3 record and a playoff appearance. She also recorded a 4.20-second transport run and 33.8-inch vertical jump at a regional high school camp in April 2018.

“Mack Brown is an amazing head coach,” Grimes told CBS Sports headquarters. “He entered the UNC with players he didn’t have, and he changed the soccer program with players he didn’t recruit. Now he has the players he recruited. I trust him, my family trusts him and we are going to win the natty.”

Brian Dohn, national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, compares Grimes to Kyle Fuller of the Chicago Bears and provided this exploratory report on his future at the college level.

“Wide shoulders and good length. Safety frame with cornering skills. Instinctive player with a high level of skill. Physical and smooth. He follows the ball well and has an excellent moment. He opens his hips and runs easily. Deep shots. Part Strong upper body that helps redirect catchers with jams. Comfortable in the rear and explodes outward. Good tackler and active in career defense. High IQ on and off the field. Leadership qualities. Must be strengthened in the back lower body. Ready to play elite program when he enters campus. Potential first round of NFL draft pick. “

Grimes is the latest addition to what is shaping up to be a stellar recruiting class for Coach Mack Brown. It is the 17th engagement in the Tar Heels class of 2021, and the first five-star prospect. They also have 11 four-star players in the 247Sports Composite. They now rank No. 4 in the team recruitment ranking behind Ohio State, Clemson and Tennessee.
