The first top-10 shake-up in more than a month pushed Coastal Carolina to 9th place in the Associated Press college football poll on Sunday.
Alabama was unanimously No. 1, followed by Notre Dame, Ohio State, Clemson and Texas A&M, followed by the teams for the sixth week in a row.
Surprising losses from Florida and Miami turned into the remaining top 10. No. 6 Cincinnati and No. Indian Indiana each advanced to one place, and No. I: Iowa State jumped two.
Then came the first Sun Belt Conference team to break the AP’s top 10, unbeaten Chanticulars (11-0).
Georgia finished 10th ahead of Florida. The Gators left five spots after losing to LSU in a bizarre and dramatic fashion on Saturday night in the fog on the 11th.
Miami was ranked 19th out of 10 after being knocked out by North Carolina. Tar Heels reached 16th place in four places.
Pole points
Alabama now ranks 211 consecutively, the second-longest in voting history, matching the state of Florida (1989-2001).
The Crimson Tide will be ahead of everyone else by itself after next week’s Southeastern Conference Championship game. To pass Nebraska’s record of 348 consecutive poll performances from 1981-2002, Alabama will need eight more seasons in the top 25.
IN-N-OUT
This epidemic-changed season has helped create some opportunities for teams that haven’t been in order for a while – or before, like Coastal Carolina – will make it into the top 25.
No. 25 San Jose State is upstart this week. The Spartans improved to 6-0 and made it to the Mountain West title game for the first time with a second-half rally against Nevada on Friday night.
The last time San Jose State was ranked was 2012 when the Spartans moved up in the rankings after completing the regular season and came in 21st in the final poll.
The No. 24 return to the rankings was North Carolina State (8-3). Wolfpack completed his season last week.
Falling down were Colorado, who lost for the first time this season, and Wisconsin, who lost for the third time and finally got the boot.
