Pelosi said on Friday that if he did not resign, the U.S. would take action last week. Democrats are poised to move forward this week with impeachment of Trump over his role in the deadly attack on the Capitol. Democrats plan to present their impeachment resolution on Monday, which already has more than 190 co-sponsors.
Cliburn’s comments came as Democrats hatefully discussed how Biden’s early days could affect the impeachment of Trump a second time as he works to approve administration appointments to the Senate and reach legal priorities like other coronavirus relief packages.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made it clear in an earlier memo that the Senate would not return to the session before Jan. 19 even if the House moves forward in the coming days to impeach Trump. The trial is set to begin on January 20 – Biden’s opening date.
From there, the Senate is largely presented as ineligible until any proceedings other than a trial are completed, as was clear during Trump’s first impeachment trial.
By impeaching and removing Trump, even at this final stage in his term, the Senate could again vote to disqualify the former president from taking the federal post again by taking extraordinary action against him.
Many congressional Republicans have made it clear they want to see Trump step down.
Rep. Of Illinois. Adam Kingsinger, meanwhile, has called for a 25th Amendment that would force Trump to step down.
