Nashville, Tenn. (AP) Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns can do more than just run the ball, and the NFL’s longest active playoff drought is coming to an end after 18 seasons.
Mayfield threw the season-high 33 for 33 yards with all four of his touchdown passes in the first half, and the Browns scored the first 1 point to win the fourth-fourth straight fourth over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
Chasing both AFC playoff berths, the Browns seemed to believe the team was in favor of a division – they are second behind the unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers in AFC North – as they improve to 9-3 for the third time in their expansion era.
The Titans (-4–4) advanced to the AFC South and dropped out after the Colts beat Houston 6-20-20, although Tennessee still has a better division record. The Titans split after a bad fourth-down spot on their opening drive. NFL rookie leader Derrick Henry lost his first lap this season on the next drive.
The run-game show against Typhons and Henry was expected to go down, with Mayfield preventing the Browns from needing the NFL’s top rushing offense. The Browns led 38-7 at halftime and topped Cincinnati in 2004 with 35 points in the second half.
The Titans made it interesting late on.
Kenny Vecaro slammed through Mayfield and he ran 53 yards with 48 seconds left. Ryan Tennyhill hit Cam Batson with 28 seconds for an 8-yard TD pass, but Andy Janowicz pulled back the Browns’ longest winning streak as they closed with four wins since 2009.
Mayfield became the first Browns quarterback to throw four TDs in the first half after Hall of Famer Otto Graham in 1951. McField, who threw his five TDs in the second half of the October 25 win over Cincinnati, had just two touchdowns. Combined passing the last four games.
NFL No one else in has thrown four TD passes in the first half of this season, and Mayfield was able to make 290 yards through halftime, his season was just outside the off-height of 297 yards.
This time, Mayfield completed a pass for Jarvis Landry with a TD pass for eight different receivers; Backup tackle Kendall Lamj became the first Browns lineman to catch a TD pass since 2001; Donovan Peoples-Jones ’75 yards and Rashard Higgins’ 17 yards.
Nick Chabbe added a 1-yard TD before halftime.
The Titans felt a little beautiful on their opening drive. Tenhill threw a wide-open offensive lineman Aaron Ron Brewer’s pass, which dropped the ball. Henry then ran to fourth and the first appeared to be descending, but the officers marked him short with a marker. Coach Mike Varable unsuccessfully challenged the venue.
Tennessee started the second half with a back-to-back touchdown in the first six minutes. First, Tennyson threw a 22-yard pass to Michael Pruitt. The tight end caught AJ Brown at a 16-yard catch and ran 3 yards for TD on the next drive to pull the Titans inside 38-21.
The Titans came up with five turnovers, the lowest in the NFL. Cleveland forced three, last at the end of the third quarter. Adam Humphries, due to his first game interception from November 1, bobbed a pass from Tennhill which was taken by Cornb corn K MJ Stewart in Browns 9.
Corey Davis of Tennessee had a career-high 11 catches for 182 yards, including a touchdown catch, as the Titans tried to rally through the air in the second half.
Garrett’s back
Miles Garrett got a bag of tenhill early in the fourth quarter, giving him 10/2 for the season. He finished second in the league despite missing two games. He led the league in the bag when he went on the COVID-19 list.
Injuries
Browns: Linebacker Mac Wilson was checked for intrusion.
Titans: Brown went down in the first half with a right ankle injury but returned.
