Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 6 – Garrett returns to drills

The start of Thursday’s practice brought some more bad news on the injury front, as we learned that CB Kevin Johnson, the favorite to win the nickelback track, got a lacerated kidney in practice on Wednesday. Yikes! Let’s see what happened on day 6 of practice.

Cleveland Browns Report on training camp – Day 6 (20-20-20)

1. In Triumphant Return: While we’ve heard of Browns players dropping out after an injury, it’s good to hear about someone returning – or rather, making his debut for the 2020 season. DE Myles Garrett, who went out with a hamstring injury, returned to individual drills during practice.

Garrett has not yet taken part in team drills. After three straight days of quilted practice, the Browns only sat in helmets and shells the day before they left on Friday.

Wide receiver of the wide receiver (Drill of the day): There are different definitions of athletics, but I consider myself a nice athletic man from a speed perspective. Would I want to take a big hit in football? Heck no – but I still love running, flying and catching the route, etc. If I had been playing basketball several days a week for the past few years I would stay in shape. With the pandemic I can ride, but it is not the same in terms of staying sharp with the speed and other muscles being worked. Long story short, I miss this kind of action myself and need to find time to come back:

3. Have a little fun: Sometimes it’s fun to just lighten the mood on the practice with some fun competition, and that’s what happened when DE Porter Gustin and OT Alex Taylor each had the chance to field three points. I do not know if there were any stakes, but both players caught all three points clean.

4. Plan rest day for Jack Conklin: For training camp, I have always been a fan of day off plans for important veterans. For one, those guys don’t have to prove themselves every day. Plus, it lets the person on the depth map get behind them in some valuable reps. The media asked themselves why RT Jack Conklin missed from practice, but it was later confirmed that he had a planned rest day. OL Chris Hubbard filled in for him on straight approach with the first team members.

5. Field goal updates: Even though K Austin Seibert has this camp been fairly accurate, his miss still comes regularly from outside 40 yards. Mei P Jamie Gillan out for a second straight day, QB Case Keenum became the holder. Seibert was 5-of-7 on his field goals, but committed to his 50-yard effort.

According to head coach Kevin Stefanski, the kicker tryouts the other day had nothing to do with Seibert, and it was just GM Andrew Berry does his due diligence. If a kicker gets COVID, it’s good to have one on speeddial.

Game of the day: The offense had some more fluid play on Thursday. The highlight of the day came when QB Baker Mayfield launched a pass downfield to WR Odell Beckham, who conceived it in the midst of double coverage of S Sheldrick Redwine and CB Donovan Olumba.

7. Brownies: CB Denzel Ward had a 95-yard pick on QB Case Keenum. … CB Terrence Mitchell got some work with the defense of the first team. … With CB Kevin Johnson out, CB MJ Stewart becomes the nickelback. … The Browns’ big defenders were worked on picking up fumbles in a drill. … If you want terrible memories Freddie Kitchens last year, then read this tweet fan Daryl Rider about the offense of catching the ball too often with the game clock to 00. … RB Nick Chubb has “been in meetings and no problems.” … A total of 46 puppies have been adopted through the Browns Puppy Pound this year.

8. Next up: The Browns have an off-day Friday. Their next rehearsal is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 at 2:25 p.m.

Other than that, I want to give props to the Browns, who give very good access and coverage to fans through their 2-hour live videos of camp every practice.
