Beginning Monday, the City of San Antonio will implement a rule change to test COVID-19 at its city-operated test locations at no cost.
These locations at Freeman Coliseum, Kazen Middle School, and Cuellar Community Center will now only screen residents who report symptoms of coronavirus.
Laura Mayes, Deputy Director of Government and Public Affairs for the City of San Antonio, said the new rule will allow people who feel sick and unable to get tested due to the lawsuit to receive a test.
The demand for virus tests has soared in line with the resurgence of positive cases in Bexar County.
Mayes emphasized that prioritizing people with symptoms helps ensure that tests are done as soon as possible, which in turn enables them to isolate themselves more quickly or seek additional medical attention if necessary.
The city is also encouraging health care individuals to contact their provider to find a test, rather than overwhelming free test sites.
“The free trial sites are intended to provide access to those who may not have insurance or a primary health care provider,” said assistant city manager Dr. Colleen Bridger.
Testing at the three city-administered locations is available daily from 10 am to 2 pm
These locations do not require an appointment and will evaluate up to 300 people per day.
