Using a credential manager is convenient and highly recommended today. Google is updating Chrome AutoComplete on Android with biometric support by entering credit card information, in addition to introducing a list of “touch to fill” accounts.
Before Chrome for Android enters the saved credit card information, users must confirm their CVC as a security measure. This is a simple step for most, but Google wants to further simplify it by allowing you to provide that confirmation using fingerprint or facial recognition, as in the Pixel 4. The work dates back to earlier this year.
You still need to provide your CVC the first time you use your credit card, but for future transactions, you will be able to confirm your credit card using biometric authentication, rather than requiring you to withdraw your wallet and enter your CVC.
There is an initial setup process, while biometric credit card authentication in Chrome for Android can be disabled entirely through setup. The browser leverages the WebAuthn standard to enroll you securely, and biometric data never leaves the device. It will come to mobile “in the next few weeks” and it is now available on Mac and Windows.
For passwords, Google is also simplifying the username and password entry process. A new “touch to fill” feature will display all of your saved accounts for the current website on a “convenient and recognizable” sheet titled “Continue to Account”.
The domain name and associated email addresses are listed. This allows one-handed login without scrolling through the small list that appears below a form field. Touch-to-fill will also be released in the coming weeks.
