China’s latest coronavirus outbreak spreads to second city

The latest coronavirus outbreak in China has spread to a second city as authorities try to stop the spread of the virus.

The Associated Press reported Monday that one of the 17 COVID-19 cases reported Monday in China was confirmed in Kashgar, an ancient city located in the northwestern province of Xinjiang.

Authorities have responded to the infection with travel restrictions, according to the AP. Another 16 cases reported in China on Monday were all in Xinjiang’s regional capital Urumqi, site of the country’s latest outbreak.

China has largely taken hold of its coronavirus outbreak after the country was the site of the first outbreak of the virus late last year and into early 2020. An increase in cases was contained in Wuhan City and the country. reported fewer than 100 new infections per day for weeks.

The Trump administration has continued to launch a barrage of criticism in China for its handling of the virus, even as the US case rate has outstripped all other countries and China has largely decreased.

Senior US officials have accused China of concealing real case numbers and death counts, while hindering global health experts who sought information on the spread of the virus from the start.

The United States reported more than 63,000 new infections on Sunday and has seen more than 3.8 million confirmed cases of coronavirus since the outbreak began, eclipsing China’s total case count of just under 86,000.
